SURF SCHOOL

The sport of surfing is growing very quickly all over the world. We have been teaching surf lessons in Tamarindo for over six years. We have four professional instructors that work full time. Each of the instructors can teach up to four students per lesson. We have three lessons a day, starting at 9am,1pm & 3pm.

Each lesson is two hours long and includes the red rash guard, soft top surfboard and instructor. Our professional surf instructors will give a 20-minute technique and safety course on the beach, and then assist you in the water. Within an hour, you will be up and catching your first wave. We have taught children from as young as 4 years old to adults up to 88 years old. All you need is a good attitude and we provide the rest.

Our staff photographer will be out on the beach, capturing all your wonderful memories on film. You can purchase the photos you like after the lesson.

PRICE: $60 per person

PRIVATE CLASSES:  $85 per person

SURFING IN TAMARINDO

Costa Rica has established a terrific reputation among surfers around the world. With the outstanding quality of the waves, that Costa Rica proudly boasts, any surfer can and will find the right spot!  Surfers thrive off of the plentiful waves that the extraordinary beaches of the northern pacific coast usually provide. Local beaches, will offer plenty of the big waves, that the true surf fanatics live for, while other beaches are perfect for beginners. Among all of the spots in Costa Rica, by far the most popular all year round is Playa Tamarindo.

Warm water surfing is enjoyed year round, with water temperatures that are always around 83 degrees. Families find that the Tamarindo area offers many opportunities for surfers of all skill levels to enjoy the great waves, that bless this part of the coast. Every year, thousands of people visit Costa Rica with only one thing on their mind....surfing!

Tamarindo, once a "secret spot" among the surfing elite has become a world famous surfing destination, since the filming of "Endless Summer II". Tamarindo has been blessed by consistent swells and off-shore conditions. Surfers can watch the waves of the Tamarindo river mouth peel right from the beach. There's six excellent surf breaks within a short walk, from any hotel in Tamarindo. CC Vacation Services will be happy to  help you plan your entire surf vacation taking you to visit all the areas many great breaks (Langosta, Playa Grande, Avellanas).

BREAK DESCRIPTION- PLAYA TAMARINDO

The town of Tamarindo has two fun breaks: El Estero, a excellent river mouth break where the Tamarindo Estuary hits the ocean. Pico Pequeno, a lava finger reef which can get perfect with a swell. Mid-tide is best for both breaks. Go surfing any tide except dead low.

BREAK DESCRIPTION- PLAYA LANGOSTA

Rights and lefts breaking over rocks and sand in front of a river mouth. Usually a little bigger than the nearby breaks in Tamarindo. Very Fun surfing, but not always perfect waves. From Tamarindo, get on the only road leading south. 1 Km south of Tamarindo. Ask anyone in town.

BREAK DESCRIPTION- PLAYA GRANDE

Playa Grande is a really fun beach break-- with perfect left and right peaks, it usually has waves that are double-overhead. A very consistent break, Playa Grande almost always has fun ride-able waves and it typically catches more swell than Tamarindo.

BREAK DESCRIPTION- PLAYA AVELLANAS

Playa Avellanas has about five different good reef/sand breaks-- with semi-hollow lefts and rights.  Playa Avellanas is located on a two mile stretch of beach. Surfing is best during mid to high tide, avoid going during low tide. Playa Avellanas is located about10 kilometers south of Tamarindo.  It is the beach just south of the new Marriott Resort, in Hacienda Pinilla.

DAY TRIP- WITCH'S ROCK

Witch's Rock is one of the most famous breaks in the country. Most well known for it's fast hollow rights, but when it's smaller the lefts are also very good. Beautiful & remote, every surfer wants to visit "Witch's." There are only a few boat taxi's going from Tamarindo to Witch's Rock and remember it isn't always possible to drive to Witch's, because of extreme rains and horrible road conditions.  So please ask about conditions, before ever making this trip without a guide, which is not advised!

DRIVING: Located in the Santa Rosa National Park, it's possible to drive all the way to the beach, if there hasn't been too much rain. (4x4 DEFINITELY REQUIRED!). The park charges $8/person if you drive in. It takes about 45 minutes to drive from the park entrance to the beach. Once you get to the beach, it's about another mile walk up the beach to the break.

BOAT TAXI FROM PLAYA DEL COCO:  The best way to go is to be shuttled down to Playa del Coco, which is about a 1.5 hour ride from Tamarindo. CC Vacations has boats that are available from Playa del Coco for $400/boat/day. Our guide will boat you there, and wait for you outside the break, for as long as your group wants to surf.

Another great advantage of taking one of our boats there, is that you can check Ollie's Point as well (Ollie's is often better than Witch's). It's a good idea to get 6 people together to split the boat, otherwise it gets expensive. In Tamarindo, people are always looking to share a boat, so if it's just a couple people you have, contact us and we will see if there is another group we have going that has room to fit.  Pura Vida!

CC Vacation Services has organized tours to Witch's Rock, that are usually always available. We'll happily transport you from Tamarindo to Playa del Coco--it costs $150 per person, which also includes our guided boat trip to hit these great waves.  After a great day of surf, we will go get lunch/dinner and then we will return to Tamarindo.

CAMPING:  DO IT! When it's possible to drive in, it's beautiful to camp right in Santa Rosa National Park. They have camping areas right next to where you park your car, including a shower (not potable though!). Be sure to bring lots of supplies!!! There are absolutely no services of any kind there. Just you and mother nature, so please be kind and take out what you take in!

OLLIE'S POINT

Ollie's Point has an excellent and very fast hollow right point break-- it was famous in the movie: "The Endless Summer II."  Like all the spots in the north Pacific, it's better on high tide. It's also better to try to avoid it during dead low tide if possible.

HOW TO GET THERE: There is no beach access. The only way to get there is to rent a boat from Playa Flamingo. We are happy to help plan this great surf adventure, just let us know--it requires a minimum of four people. We will transport you from Tamarindo to Playa Flamingo--it costs $200 per person (minimum of 4 people), which includes the guided boat trip, lunch and then your return transportation to Tamarindo.
